27th October 2000, Wilmslow,
UK. 4D UK, publishers of the award-winning 4th Dimension (4D) database development
Product Line, today announced the release of 4D version 6.7. This major
new upgrade builds on 4Ds existing powerful tool-set to give developers
even more cutting-edge technology for building great solutions for stand-alone,
client-server and web environments.
SSL support for e-commerce security
Full CGI support
WAP, XML and WML support
4D Open for Java
4D Web Assistant for easy database deployment on the Web
Components for creating re-usable code libraries
Bigger database capability with 16 million keys per index
Improved image handling
4D 6.7 now supports SSL 2 and SSL 3 (Secure Sockets Layer). Since SSL is
the industry standard for secure and encrypted communications over the Web,
4D developers can now confidently build a broad range of e-commerce solutions
including on-line stores, sensitive data distribution and more.
The improved Common Gateway Interface (CGI) support is very comprehensive in 4D 6.7. Perl, CGI-bin, ISAPI DLL and other CGIs can now be used by 4D. 4D 6.7 can also act as a CGI to existing web servers like WebSTAR, IIS, Apache and others.
4D is now able to operate as a WAP server. 4D developers can generate
WML pages in response to connections from mobile devices supporting the
WAP standard. Designing a single application to support mobile phone users,
local network users and web browser users is simple with 4D 6.7.
4D Open for Java 6.7 allows developers to develop Java clients for 4D Server 6.7. In addition to basic data manipulation and queries, 4D Open for 4D Java enables developers to create multiple client processes, execute a stored procedure on 4D Server, create record sets, roll-back transactions, set READ/WRITE privileges for individual records, create arrays, variables and much more.
The new 4D Web Assistant allows developers to publish new 4D applications directly on to the web without writing a single line of code.
4D Components are libraries of code that can be made private, protected or public. 4D Components can
contain 4D Methods, Tables, Fields and Forms. They give developers a secure
method of distributing or re-using their code.
The maximum number of keys per index has been increased from 8 million per index to 16 million per index.
4D 6.7 uses QuickTime 4 which means developers can save pictures in many popular formats including GIF, JPEG, PNG and FlashPix. Developers can also easily create thumbnail images on the fly.
"We have responded to the needs of 4D developers by releasing a product which incorporates great new technologies which will keep 4D well ahead of the competition," said Rob Wylie, General Manager, 4D UK. "With 4D version 6.7 we have given 4D developers even more great tools to build and deploy outstanding database solutions for stand-alone, client-server and web environments."
