4th Dimension - Migrating to 4D View
As a developer, you know how important it is to be able to associate calculation
and simulation features of a spreadsheet in order to create truly professional
presentations of data. Our new plug-in, 4D View, enables you to do this.
4D View is a complete spreadsheet and a data viewer plug-in that offers
you the conventional features of a spreadsheet, while enabling you to personalize
the display of your data. Two other plug-ins, 4D Calc and 4D List, have
been carbonized for Mac OS X, and let you progressively migrate to 4D View.
To migrate to 4D View, you have several different options, which will depend
on your situation, needs, and time available:
- If you have never developed with 4D Calc or ALP* plug-ins, you
can directly develop with 4D View, which will give you all the features
you need.
- If you have developed an application with 4D Calc 6.7 or ALP plug-ins
and want to update your application with 4D 6.8: you can progressively
migrate to 4D View. To do this, you can upgrade your 4D Calc 6.7 or ALP
application to 4D Calc 6.8 or 4D List. The migration from 4D Calc 6.7
to 4D Calc 6.8 and from ALP 7.5 to 4D List can be done very smoothly,
since the products are based on the same resource ID range. To migrate
to 4D View, you then have to re-develop your application. You will notice
that your 4D Calc 6.7 documents can be opened by 4D View, allowing you
to easily save them under this format.
As an example, let's say you give your client a database containing
100 4D Calc or ALP forms. You do not have enough time to update them to
4D View in one shot, but you still want to update to 4D 6.8. If this is
the case, you can choose to migrate only 20 forms to 4D View, while the
other 80 forms remain under 4D Calc 6.8 or 4D List. You will be able to
re-develop them progressively under 4D View when you get more time to
do it.
- If you have developed an application with 4D Calc 6.7 or ALP plug-ins
and want to directly migrate to 4D View: you have to directly re-develop
your application with 4D View, since the 4D Calc and ALP commands are
not recognised by 4D View. However, this development will be different,
using new techniques that offer higher levels of performance. You will
notice that your 4D Calc 6.7 documents can be opened by 4D View, allowing
you to easily save them under this format, with the programming remaining
to be done.
