4D Mail Architecture Primer

Download PDF version

Like the acclaimed Web Server in 4D WebSTAR Server Suite V, 4D Mail for Mac OS X has been completely redesigned for optimum performance and ease-of-use. 4D Mail will consist of two major components: the SMTP server and the Mailbox server, both BSD Unix applications. The SMTP server will be responsible for e-mail traffic, while the primary task of the Mailbox server will be to serve POP and IMAP accounts (see figure 1a). These two servers, which need to run on the same machine, will use disk-based processing for most tasks, keeping memory use low and performance high (see figure 1b).

Administration

The 4D WebSTAR V Admin Server, which already handles administration for Web, WebDAV and FTP services, will also be used to administer 4D Mail. This means that administrators will be able to use the same easy-to-use 4D WebSTAR Admin Client interface to securely and remotely configure all of these services. In addition, all Mail server settings will be stored in human-readable format, and each mailbox will be stored in a separate file, giving administrators a great deal of flexibility when maintaining accounts or troubleshooting.

Extensibility

4D will provide APIs for both the SMTP and the Mailbox servers, allowing third-parties to enhance 4D Mail's feature-set with their own add-ons.

New Features

While server administrators can choose to run all services from one machine, they will also be able to run Mail services on one machine and Web services on another machine without violating the 4D WebSTAR license.
