Installation Guidance

Introduction

The 4D installation procedures are designed to make the installation of 4D products as simple as possible while protecting 4D's copyright and intellectual property rights. The serial number licensing system first introduced with 4th Dimension v6 is designed to give the user of 4D products as much flexibility as possible without requiring the use of hardware `dongles' or activation disks. 4D v6.5 expands on this system.

Licenses for 4D Server and expansion packs can now be added without the need for floppy disk expansion packs - this allows for online purchase and delivery of expansion numbers and eases installation on computers such as the iMac which do not have a floppy drive.

Standard Installation Process

4D v6.5 ships on two hybrid CD ROMs. Hybrid CD ROMs will mount on either Mac OS or Windows 95/98/NT. On Mac OS you will only see the Mac OS partition, and vice versa.

The CD ROMs have installers which will automatically launch on insertion into either a Macintosh or Windows computer's CD drive. CD Autorun (Windows)/Autoplay (Mac OS) must be enabled for this to happen.

Installation

Installation is easier if Autorun/Autoplay is enabled. These options are on by default on both platforms.

Insert the product CD into the CD ROM drive. The Autorun/Autoplay program will launch and display the installer window. You can now click the Install 4D Products button to begin installation.

You can alternatively install Demo versions of the products. Demonstration versions do not need serial numbers but have restricted capabilities.

You can now read the license agreement. If you accept its terms and conditions click Yes to continue installation. If you disagree with the terms click No to quit the installer.

Autorun/Autoplay Disabled

Mac OS

On Mac OS you can disable CD ROM autoplay in the QuickTime Settings Control Panel. If Autorun is disabled the installer will not automatically launch, but the Mac OS partition of the CD ROM will mount on the desktop.

Double-click the icon to open the CD ROM.

Double-click the Install 4D products folder.

Double-click the Installer alias. You are now at the license agreement and can now read it. If you accept its terms and conditions click Yes to continue installation. If you disagree with the terms click No to quit the installer.

Windows

If Autorun is disabled the CD ROM will mount but not launch. You can access the installer for 4D products at the path:

CD Drive:\4D Product\Install 4D Products\Disk 1\Setup.exe

Double click the Setup.exe file to start the installation process.

Now you are in the installer.

Do not select Electronic registration card (the default option)!

There are a number of problems that this option may cause. They will cause installation to fail.

screenshot

Most installation problems occur because of serial numbers. Here are a few rule to guide you:

Make sure that the serial number that you have is for the correct platform. Mac OS serial numbers only work on Macintosh, and Windows serial numbers on Windows. (This may sound obvious but the serial numbers are easy to mix up when installing 4D on multiple platforms.)

Mac OS Installer Window

The Custom Install window will display on Mac OS. On Windows the installer will default to the Default Installation option (note that the installer appearance is different on Windows).Only the programs that you are licensed to install and use will appear in this window. (Your serial number is tied to both platform and product[s].)

Mac OS Progress Thermometer

screenshot

A thermometer displays the progress of installation. You can click Cancel to terminate the installation. On Mac OS this is as shown, on Windows the standard Install Shield ® thermometers are shown.

At the end of installation the following dialog appears:

Mac OS Alert

At this stage you can click Continue to perform further installations or click Quit to leave the installer.

Installer Memory Problems on Mac OS

Installation of programs via installers tends to use large amounts of RAM on Mac OS. It is advisable after installing to quit the installer and then restart your computer. Multiple installations without quitting and restarting may cause memory problems that may cause your computer to crash eventually.

Installing Programs Not Installed Previously

Consider the scenario that you purchased 4D Developer Edition and did not install all the programs (perhaps you did not have sufficient space at that time). Now you wish to install the remainder of the programs that you purchased.

Installing Additional Serial Numbers

You may wish to install further copies of the same product, for example a second copy of 4D with a different serial number:

Installing Demo Versions

From the installer you can click to install demo versions and sample databases:

Not all 4D products are available in demonstration versions. Demonstration versions have various restrictions on their use built in. Serial numbers are not required.

Installing 4D Client Without a Serial Number

If you are using 4D Server in a cross-platform environment you may be using 4D Server on only one platform, Mac OS or Windows. You have therefore purchased a serial number for only one platform. When installing the client software on the other platform (to the Server) you can avoid the requirement for a serial number during installation by installing 4D Client from the demonstration installer on the product CD ROM.

Select the custom install and install the server demonstration. The server software can then be discarded. The Client software is a full version of the software.

Mac OS

The Mac OS version of 4D client consists only of a single file. This can be copied over the network to as many computers as required.

Windows

Windows installation requires the correct placement of DLLs and entries in the registry. It is best to install 4D Client direct from the CD using the demonstration installer.

Potential Problems

Electronic Registration Selected

This is the most common problem during installation. If you had Electronic registration card selected when you click the OK button you will see the following screen:

screenshot

Here you would complete your registration details. If you see this screen you should not complete any of the data - click the << Back button, and select Paper registration card .

If you click the Next >> button you will be asked to complete further dialogs until you are asked for your Product ID and Serial Number. If you enter them both and continue the following dialog will be displayed:

(This is caused by differences between international and US license numbering schemes.)

To Recover from this Problem

After Installation is Complete

After installation is complete you will find that the serial numbers have been written to a number of text files in the 4D Preferences folder.

Mac OS

This is located at the following path:

Your Hard Disk:System Folder:Preferences:4D

This folder will contain:

You may wish to back up this file to another disk: if you have any hard disk errors you can restore the 4D folder and 4D programs without the need to reinstall everything from CD ROM.

Windows

After installation the serial number and preferences files will be in the directory:

Drive:\windows\4D

Virtual PC & SoftWindows Installation (Mac OS)

It is possible to install 4th Dimension for Windows on a Macintosh running a Windows emulator such as Virtual PC or SoftWindows. Performance is slower than running on a real Windows computer due to the overhead of emulation. However for testing or documentation purposes it is quite adequate.

It is possible, for example, to have a server running 4D for Mac OS or Windows and a single client computer running both 4D Mac and 4D Windows clients. They appear to the server as two separate clients. A configuration such as this would allow testing of interface appearance, directory paths and font issues easily on one computer.

You will need separate serial numbers for 4D v6.5 for each platform, Mac OS and Windows since they are separate products.

Installation Tips

Once the intallation process starts it is exactly the same as on Windows - since Virtual PC/SoftWindows is running a real version of Windows.

Both emulators support Windows 95/98 and it is possible to install Windows NT although it is not supported.

Be aware that testing a 4D application on emulated Windows does not guarantee that it will work on all real Windows configurations. It is highly recommended that you also test the application on as many real Windows systems as possible to ensure thorough testing. However this is a low cost way to do initial testing.

Running Mac OS 4D Databases on Virtual PC/SoftWindows

After developing the database on Mac OS, convert it to a Windows database by using 4D Transporter as normal. You can use drag and drop, or the Virtual PC shared folder, to move the resulting files to the virtual Windows hard drive. The application can then be executed as a normal Windows application.

4D does not support running 4D under Virtual PC/SoftWindows and therefore technical support is not offered.

Installing Expansion Serial Numbers on 4D Server

With the introduction of 4D Server version 6.5 there is a new procedure for purchasing and installing expansion products. To install an expansion pack you will need an Expansion Serial Number. To obtain this you must register your product.

Purchasing an Expansion Pack

When you purchase an expansion pack from 4D you will receive a registration card for the product purchased. This card will contain an Expansion Product ID Number . This is not the same as the Expansion Serial Number . Why?

With v6.5, expansion packs are tied to a specific copy of 4D Server. For example, you may have multiple copies of 4D Server, or you may be purchasing an expansion pack on behalf of someone else. Therefore 4D does not know which copy of 4D Server you will be installing the expansion pack with when the card is shipped.

After receiving the card (or the Expansion Product ID Number over the telephone or by fax) you can install the expansion pack on a specific server by either registering online or calling 4D Customer Service.

Important

Registering the Expansion Pack Online

The form will then display your Expansion Serial Number . This is the only time that this number will be displayed:

You will need this number to install your expansion pack. To install the Expansion Serial Number:

Installing ODBC

If you wish to install 4D ODBC plug-ins or drivers you may first wish to read a technical notes which covers ODBC driver issues before attempting installation:
